When we launched Ominocity, our local music blog, we spent considerable time searching for the best Facebook Connect plugin for WordPress to allow visitors to comment and interact with the site without having to create an account. We tested pretty much every Facebook Connect plugin we could find and settled on Facebook Connect WordPress Plugin by Socialable which was the most feature full plugin available.
While many Facebook Connect plugins just swap out your comment system, Socialable’s Facebook Connect WordPress Plugin automatically creates an account for the visitor when they connect to your site through Facebook. Not only can they leave comments as their Facebook profile, the plugin also allows them to “like” posts, and offers widgets for you to display recent visitors, fans of your page, and recent activity on your Facebook page.
Socialable’s Facebook Connect WordPress Plugin can be downloaded for free at: http://www.sociable.es/facebook-connect/

RSS is a handy technology allowing users to subscribe to your blog so they can keep reading your content and return to your website when an article interests them. RSS helps to maintain loyal readers and drive traffic back to your blog, however it offers little for website owners to track the activity of their subscribers.
Google has resolved this problem with their FeedBurner service which replaces your blog’s feed with an enhanced feed provided by FeedBurner. With FeedBurner you can track the number of subscribers to your blog, see what articles they read, insert Google Ads and quick sharing links into the articles in your feed, allow email subscriptions, and optimize your feed for podcasting.
If you write a blog, enhancing your feed with FeedBurner is essential to get the most out of your RSS feed. Sign up for free at http://feedburner.google.com/.

If your business or website is looking to get as many Twitter followers as possible — and keep them — following back Twitter users that follow you is extremely important. Following back every user that follows you can be quite the tiresome chore, but fortunately a service called Social Oomph (formerly Tweet Later) can automate this for you.
Just sign up for a Social Oomph account, connect your Twitter account up to the service, and enable the Auto-Follow option, and from that point on Social Oomph will automatically follow back all your new Twitter followers.
Now start submitting your Twitter account to directories like We Follow to start growing your follower count!

Tech industry heavyweights like Jason Calacanis have been praising Google+ for its traffic referral abilities, stating that sharing a link on Google+ is 20x more effective than on Twitter and 15x more effective than on Facebook. In the month since Google+ has launched we’ve seen it jump up to be the 3rd top referrer of traffic to many of our own blogs and websites, despite the current lack of business and brand profiles on Google+ and having far fewer followers on the Plus than on other services.
Other industry insiders have noted that posts on Google+ receive far more engagement from followers than on Twitter or Facebook. Diggnation co-host Kevin Rose is even ditching his personal blog for Google+, thrilled by the massive amount of comments he receives to his posts. We too find that Google+ users are far more likely to comment on our posts than Twitter or Facebook users, or even on the blogs themselves. Even better, rather than simply hitting “Like”, Google+ users are more likely to engage in actual conversations about the posts which is extremely valuable and inspiring.
Are you receiving mad traffic to your website from Google+? Are comments to your posts filling your notifications bar? Is this just because Google+ is the hot new thing or is Google really on to something here?

Bitly is a free URL shortener and social media analytics service popular on social networks like Twitter where character count is king. As handy as the URL shortener is, the real power comes when you sign up for a Bitly account and dive into the analytics service that tracks every click so you can prove just how big of a social media mogul you are.
Bitly features a powerful API that plugs the service into nearly every Twitter related plugin you can find. We use this feature with the Twitter Tools WordPress plugin to automatically post our article links on Twitter and allow us to track the hits they get. You can even use a custom domain with the service so you can have a URL shortener of your very own and maintain your branding.
