What Are The Differences Between Addon, Parked, and Subdomains in cPanel?

DomainsOne frequently asked question that our tech support staff at Varial Hosting often gets asked is “What are the differences between addon, parked, and subdomains in cPanel?”

Subdomains

If you own the domain myawesomewebsite.com, a subdomain would be an extension of that domain such as blog.myawesomewebsite.com.  Since a subdomain is based off of your main domain, no additional domain purchases are required as subdomains are simply a way to organize your domain’s content and services.  All of our hosting plans include support for adding an unlimited number of subdomains for free!

Addon Domains

With addon domains, you can host multiple websites from just one hosting account.  Let’s say you have signed up for a hosting account for myawesomewebite.com, which is your personal blog, but you also run a business and your sister would like to start a blog too.  You can set up myawesomebusiness.com and myawesomesister.com as addon domains so that you are now hosting 3 completely separate websites from one account!  You will just need to ensure that you have purchased each of these domain names and that you have selected an appropriate hosting plan that supports the number of domains you wish to add.  All plans but our Budget Hosting plan support the hosting of multiple domains and if you need a few more addon domains than your plan allows they can be purchased individually for $1/month.

Parked Domains

Parked domains simply mirror the content of the primary domain so they are useful if you also own myawesomewebsite.net and myawesomewebsite.org and want them all to show the same content.  Like with addon domains you will need to ensure that you have purchased each of these domain names.

By default, all of our hosting plans that support multiple domains are set up to use addon domains instead of parked domains, but we can convert any of your available addon domains into parked domains at your request.  We offer addon domains instead because not only do they allow you to host multiple websites but you can also redirect your domains, so you can just redirect myawesomewebsite.net and myawesomewebsite.org to myawesomewebsite.com rather than having 3 domains with the same content.  Redirecting additional domains instead of mirroring them is typically preferred so that you are focusing your search engine rank on 1 domain, and not spreading it across multiple domains.

POP vs IMAP Mail: Which is Right for Me?

When configuring your email client, you may have noticed some Internet jargon like POP and IMAP mentioned when setting up your email address.

POP (Post Office Protocol) and IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) are the two most prevalent protocols for email retrieval. Along with SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) for sending messages, Varial Hosting supports both of these standards.

That’s all fine and dandy but what’s the difference between these two email retrieval protocols and which one should I pick?

POP is typically the default protocol that most email clients select for you.  When you check your mail in your email client using POP, it downloads all messages from the server, deleting them as they are downloaded, and saves them to your computer.

In contrast, when you check your mail using IMAP, all messages are always saved on the server and it just syncs all messages and changes back to your computer.

Now, if you only have one computer that you check your mail on, you likely won’t notice a difference between these protocols.  If you have multiple computers and a phone that you check mail on, you’ll notice a world of difference!

With POP, messages are saved to the device you are using at the time when they are downloaded, so you may end up with some messages on your desktop, some on your laptop, and others on your phone.  I need not say how frustrating this can be!

With IMAP, everything is saved on the server so your computers and mobile devices are always in sync.  The only downside to IMAP is that after time your mailbox on the server can grow to be quite large so you may need a larger hosting account to support it.

If you check your mail on multiple devices, IMAP is certainly the way to go.  You’ll be able to access your messages no matter what device you are using which is far worth the extra disk space it uses by saving all messages on the server.  If you only check your email on one computer, go with POP and you may even be able to save a few bucks on your hosting!

How to Eliminate 99% of Your Email Spam

Getting sick of hitting the “delete” key?  Every Varial Hosting web hosting plan includes MailScanner, a life saving tool found in your cPanel control panel.  MailScanner is an advanced email spam and virus scanning service that automatically assigns a spam score to all incoming emails based on a lot of technical science/magic.  The higher the spam score, the more likely the email is to be spam.

MailScanner

MailScanner is disabled by default so you only need to make a few quick changes to start giving that “delete” key a rest.  Simply set low scoring spam to forward to a spam@yourdomain.com email address (be sure to create one first!) and set high scoring spam to be deleted.  This will ensure that all high scoring spam is deleted but allows you to log into your spam@yourdomain.com email address to review it for any legitimate emails that may have been mistaken for potential spam.

MailScanner

With MailScanner you can also whitelist and blacklist email addresses to ensure that you get all of your important emails but don’t have to look at the ones your crazy ex-girlfriend keeps sending.  You can also configure the values for low and high scoring spam to make MailScanner more strict or lenient at your discretion.
