As a system administrator, blogger, and website developer, I’ve spent considerable time and money finding the best iPhone apps that will allow me to take my work on the road, so I can keep tabs on my business while trying to maintain a social life. The following apps are the best at what they do and have saved me a few times while trying to sneak a pint at the bar.
1Password

1Password is an excellent password management utility for Mac and Windows ($39.99) that takes the trouble out of remembering passwords. 1Password plugs right into your web browser on your desktop so you can log into websites with a single click and can sync your passwords to every computer and mobile device you own. 1Password takes password management on the road with 1Password for iPhone ($9.99) and 1Password Pro ($14.99 – Universal app for iPhone & iPad). Stay secure while conveniently having all of your passwords with you on the go!

Dropbox

Dropbox is a life saving utility that will automatically sync your files to all of your computers, mobile devices, and the web so you can retrieve them wherever you are. Need an important document? Just place it in your Dropbox folder at work and it’s instantly synced to your Dropbox folder at home and on your phone! Just download the free Dropbox for iPhone and iPad app to get started!

iSSH

If you are a system administrator you know full well that servers always seem to crash at the most inconvenient times. With iSSH ($9.99 – Universal app for iPhone & iPad), you can SSH or VNC into your server and fix the problem without ever getting out of bed. That sure beats waking up and driving to the data center to fix a problem!

FTP On The Go

Problem: You’re on vacation sipping margaritas on the beach when you receive an email from one of your web design clients. They’ve moved into a new office building but forgot to get you to update their mailing address on their website. Their customers keep going to the wrong location so they are willing to pay double if you can fix it for them today.
Solution: Fire up FTP On The Go for iPhone ($6.99) or FTP On The Go Pro ($9.99 – Universal app for iPhone & iPad), log into their FTP server, load up their contact.html page, and update their mailing address from your phone without ever putting down your margarita. Charge double for all your hard work.

WordPress

If you’re a blogger, chances are that you are very familiar with WordPress, my blogging and content management platform of choice. With the free WordPress app for iPhone and iPad you can create and edit posts, moderate comments, and upload photos and video directly from your phone. No longer will you miss out on posting a breaking story because your laptop is back at the office!

Have a massive video library but can’t sync it to your iPhone and iPad due to Apple’s lame restrictions on pretty much every video format but H264? Curse Apple no longer as Air Video ($2.99) is here to save you from incompatible file hell.
After installing a small server on your Windows or Mac desktop just fire up Air Video and within a few seconds you’ll be streaming your favourite movies and TV shows to your iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Videos look great, only take a second or two to load, and don’t buffer constantly while watching. Air Video will play pretty much anything you throw at it – DivX, Xvid, MKV – as well as your HD videos too.
Best of all, Air Video is a universal app so it will run on your iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad with only a single purchase!

Reeder for Mac
While many are getting their news from social media outlets like Twitter these days, I still prefer taking all of my RSS feeds in at once each day, much like sitting down with a newspaper and coffee in the morning, just much more nerdy.
I had been using NetNewsWire as my RSS client of choice since buying my first Mac over 4 years ago, but I was never happy with its mobile versions. While NetNewsWire’s iPhone app supported Google Reader, it didn’t seem to sync up right with the desktop version and felt slow and clunky.

Reeder for iPhone
Fed up, I decided it was time to start searching for a better option. A few Google searches and questions to my Twitter followers later, it turns out that there’s a new RSS reader for iOS and Mac that everyone is hopelessly in love with — Reeder.
Reeder is available for the Mac ($9.99), iPhone ($2.99), and iPad ($4.99), supports Google Reader, and is extremely clean and polished. Syncing between devices works perfect every time and articles look great in Reeder’s minimalist interface. Rather than reading articles in a browser I find myself using Reeder’s Readability integration which strips out all but the article’s text and images so you may continue reading articles in Reeder’s clean interface rather than loading up the publisher’s website.
While the suite of apps is a little pricey in App Store standards, I think I paid $25 for the desktop version alone of NetNewsWire many years ago, so parting with $18 for 3 quality apps that I use on a daily basis was a no brainer.
